Colloquium - Dr. Lily Vuong, Thursday May 12, 4:30 PM, Black 151

On Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 4:30 PM in Black Hall, Room 151, Professor Lily Vuong will give a talk titled "Virginity, Marriage, and the Role of Women in the Acts of Thecla and the Acts of Xanthippe and Polyxena."

In the Acts of Thecla and the Acts of Xanthippe and Polyxena, virginity, chastity, and ascetic practices are consistent themes throughout the narrative, but their views on them are strikingly different. This paper explores evidence of competing ideas and intra-Christian disputes over virginity, marriage, and the role of women in late antiquity.
