Sigmund Freud's theory of subjectivity develops key themes that run throughout nineteenth-century German philosophy. In this talk, Dr. Altman and Dr. Coe will discuss these convergences, including the role of history and culture in how we conceive of ourselves, how the activity of interpretation shapes how our drives express themselves, and how autonomy is undermined by irrationality. Dr. Altman and Dr. Coe's new book, "The Fractured Self in Freud and German Philosophy", will be published in 2013.
