Program Description:
Central Washington University has offered the Health and Physical Education (HPE) Masters Online Graduate Program since 2001. The program caters to professionals teaching in the field of Physical Education, School Health, and other endorsement areas who desire to obtain a master's of science degree through a flexible and convenient delivery platform.
The HPE program is excellent for:
  • PE/Health endorsed teachers seeking a master's degree for professional advancement (salary increase is a plus).
  • Primary and Secondary teachers in Washington state who desire to obtain a WA state Health/Fitness endorsement.
  • Master's degree holders desiring to obtain the Health/Fitness endorsment (may be able to substitute some graduate courses)
The HPE Masters program believes that the diversity of viewpoints, backgrounds and experiences strengthens our research, scholarship and teaching and supports underrepresented and socio-economically disadvantaged students and strives to create an environment that is welcoming to all ethnic groups, genders, and to individuals of diverse sexual orientations.

The program has provided numerous graduates with the information and work ethic to be more effective teachers and has even had some graduates continue to become journal article and book authors as well as state and regional Teachers Of the Year. Here is what some of the students say about their experience in the Master's program:

"I live near San Francisco, so when I was searching for a graduate program I had many excellent ones to choose from... the CWU Master's program made me a better teacher and enabled me to become a leader in my district and beyond. The instructors are passionate, knowledgeable and engaged in physical education at all levels. They are a tremendous resource for both students and graduates. If you want to take your teaching to the next level and are self-motivated, then this is the program for you."

~ Terri Drain, 2006 NBCT, 2007 California TOY, 2008 SW District TOY
"I engaged in extensive research prior to applying to CWU. Directors of prestigious programs unanimously expressed high regard for the CWU online program and the professors involved in this program. The degree of professor involvement was far superior at CWU. The Master's project that I chose was rigorously reviewed; the result is that I now have an ebook for sale."

~ Sharon Bolden, 2008 Instructor, Portland Community College
"The CWU Master’s program provided me the opportunity to network with,
and learn from, other talented teachers in the field of physical education.
The program challenge me to reflect on my teaching, and provided
learning opportunities to enhance what I do in my classes.  I completed
my master’s feeling that my learning opportunities were worthwhile, and
left with an extended network of PE colleagues to continue to learn from.  I
would highly recommend this program to any physical education teacher!"

~Sara Russell, 2009, PE & Health Teacher, Maple Valley, WA
2011 Nationally Board Certified, 2014 SHAPE Washington HS PE Teacher of the Year, 2015 Northwest District HS PE Teacher of the Year, 2016 SHAPE America National HS PE Teacher of the Year
