RESTON, VA, March 29, 2012 – Stephen Jefferies of Central Washington University (CWU), WA, was recognized with the Honor Award by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) at its national convention in Boston, Massachusetts, March 13 – 17. The Honor Award recognizes recipients, for their personal integrity, showcase of spirit of devoted service to the professions, and outstanding and noteworthy contributions to the advancement of health, physical education, recreation, or dance.

Jefferies has been a professor of physical education at CWU since 1986. Aside from teaching, he has created summer physical education camps, an annual statewide workshop for physical education teachers, a community unicycling and juggling club, and served as a school board director. He is also the creator and publisher of, the monthly online magazine viewed by physical education professionals nationally and internationally regarding the latest trends in the field.

Jefferies’ professional affiliations include serving twice as the vice-president of Physical Education for the Washington Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (WAHPERD) and he simultaneously served as president of WAHPERD and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). He has served on AAHPERD’s Vision 1 and Vision II committees that made recommendations for the unification of the five national associations. Jefferies was also the creator of NASPE's PE 2020 initiative that seeks to create a roadmap for designing the future of public school physical education.

Jefferies earned a bachelor’s degree from the University from Exeter, England in Health and Physical Education and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Oregon.
