Films & Speakers

Each year OPR hosts films, guest speakers, and clinics in order to inspire and motivate members the outdoor community.

Below is a list of the events we have scheduled thus far.  If you have a story that needs to be told or know of someone who has an extraordinary story to share, let us know!

These events are organized by students, for students and all community members are welcome to join in.  We look forward to expanding our outdoor community.

2.7 Thursday Jon Stimberis:  Avalanche Awareness Night

7:30 p.m. • SURC 137B • Free
John Stimberis, an avalanche forecaster for the Washington State Department of Transportation, Summit at Snoqualmie, and Alpental will share avalanche awareness tips and discuss current avalanche safety methods implemented in the mountains and ski resorts today. This is your opportunity to get quality, up to date information on avalanches in the Pacific Northwest.

2.21 Brock Gavery:  Triple Threat

7:30 p.m. • SURC 137B • Free
What do you get when you introduce two ultra-runners to an ice axe and a road bike? In the great Pacific Northwest, you get the Rainier Triple Threat. Come and hear about Brock Gravery and Sam Thompson's incredible journey as they biked 120 miles from Seattle to the base of Mt. Rainier, climbed to the summit, and descended to run the 93 mile Wonderland Trail around the mountain in just 83 hours! This year they took on the Glacier Peak Triple Threat, a 120-mile bike ride followed by a 10,500-foot summit of Glacier Peak followed by a 93 mile run.
 

2.28 Jon Kedrowski:  "Climb Your Own Everest"

7:30 p.m. • SURC Theater • Free

In partnership with PASS and the OPR Speaker Series: Jon Kedrowski presents “Climb Your Own Everest".  Dr. Jon Kedrowski, acclaimed author, world-class mountaineer and Everest summiteer, will share tales of his journeys and experiences.  Last May, Kedrowski made it to the top of Mt. Everest one week after having to turn back only 800 feet from the summit due to a terrible storm.  This storm was the second deadliest in Mt. Everest history, claiming seven lives in one night.  Kedrowski will also be on hand to sign his new book, "Sleeping on the Summits:  Colorado 14er High Bivys."
