Wilderness First Responder Certification Course

Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals (OPR) is sponsoring a Wilderness First Responder Certification course, presented by the Wilderness Medicine Training Center. This rigorous course is open to anyone, including those living outside of Ellensburg. The course costs $500 for CWU students and Rec. Center members (before May 1), $600 (after May 1) and $550 for non-members (before May 1), $650 (after May 1).

The course has two parts—home study and testing (March 25 - May 31), followed by a five-day practical course in June. Upon completion of the course, participants will earn their Wilderness First Responder Certification.

Section one calls for participants to complete online lessons and tests on material Wilderness First Responders must know. These lessons include presentations on how to deal with medical emergencies like spinal cord injuries, hypothermia and seizures in a remote environment.

Three classroom sessions will be scheduled to help on-campus and local participants with the material. Students in the course must complete all section one components prior to attending the on-site practical session.

Section two of the Wilderness First Responder Certification course is June 10 to 14 at OPR. This five-day practical session includes 10 or more hours of class time per day, along with several hands-on lab sessions to simulate real world situations.

This course should not be taken lightly, as the Wilderness Medicine Training Center requires a great deal of dedication from its students. To learn more about the course and what it requires of participants, visit www.wildmedcenter.com.

Weekly Challenge Open Hours

Outdoor Pursuits and Rentals (OPR) is offering students the opportunity to conquer the massive CWU Challenge Course at their Weekly Challenge. The course will open up Wednesdays at 5 p.m. and admission is $5 for CWU students and Recreation Center members.

Thrill seekers are encouraged to try their hand at tackling the daunting task of completing the CWU Challenge Course. Participants will get the chance to maneuver their way across a tight rope, scale the 50-foot high Alpine tower and soar through the air on the giant swing.

No experienced needed. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and active clothing.
