We would like to take this opportunity to invite you and your students to participate in the 2014 Central Washington University Trumpet Festival. The festival takes place on Wednesday, November 12th from 9am to 5pm at the CWU Music Building. This year’s guest artist is Dr. J Kyle Gregory. Expect another renowned trumpet player to join him. Along with John Harbaugh, these accomplished musicians will also be giving clinics and master classes during the day.
2014 Trumpet Fest standard registration is $25.00. It's an additional $10.00 to enter the National Trumpet Competition event. Reduced registration is $20.00 per person for groups of 10 or more.
Students will have the opportunity to compete in the Northwest High School Division of the National Trumpet Competition, also held during the festival. If they are selected as the winner, they will automatically advance to the semi-final round at the national competition in the spring of 2015. Additionally, they will win a prize courtesy of Ted Brown Music and the CWU Trumpet Club.
Also joining us for the festival will be vendors providing numerous instruments and accessories available for purchase. There will be an opportunity to play these horns as well. Our vendors include, Ted Brown Music, Conn/Selmer, , and the Yamaha Corporation.
If you or your student is traveling as part of a school group, there is a special discount rate available, which is $10 less than the regular admission price. In order to be eligible for this discount, groups must contain 15 or more people and the educator of the group must contact us prior to signing up.

2014 Guest Artists
Dr. J Kyle Gregory
Kyle was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in Bloomington. He currently lives between Verona, Italy and Colorado.
He studied at Berklee College of Music, Indiana University, and the University of Northern Colorado, completing his doctorate in 1995. In 1992 he received the prestigious Fulbright Grant for a year of pedagogical research into new methods of teaching improvisation in Hungary. From 1992 to 1997 Kyle was a professor of classical trumpet and jazz at Bradley University in Illinois.
Currently Kyle travels throughout the USA, Italy, Europe, and the rest of the world as a solo artist and educator, having performed and taught in the United States, Italy, Canada, Sweden, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, England, Spain, Romania, Germany, the Ivory Coast, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand. He plays regularly in various formations, including the Lydian Sound Orchestra, the Peo Alfonsi Quartet, the Robert Bonisolo Quartet, and his own groups--World Downside Up, and Tongues of Fire. In past years he performed with numerous internationally-known jazz and commercial artists, including Paul Motian, Bob Mintzer, JJ Johnson, Dianne Reeves, Liza Minelli, The Temptations, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, and the Mingus Dynasty.
Kyle has recorded over 40 albums with various artists and independent labels, including most recently EGEA, El Gallo Rojo, and Almar Records. WORLD DOWNSIDE UP, a suite of original compositions inspired by the Beatitudes, was recorded together with Paolo Birro, Salvatore Maiore, Roberto Dani, and Aya Shimura. In the Winter of 2012 his new project, TONGUES OF FIRE, will be released, featuring Robert Bonisolo, Rossano Emili, Mauro Beggio, Giulio Corini, and Anke Helfrich.
Fred Powell, owner of Powell Trumpets of Elkhart, Indiana also remains a professional freelance musician in the Chicago & Northwest Indiana region, touring periodically with groups such as the Boston Brass & the Artisans in Brass. He has served as adjunct faculty at universities in both Florida and Indiana. Powell has performed with the Florida Symphony, Savannah Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, the Brevard Orchestra, the Golden State Brass Band, Advocate Brass Band, Indianapolis Symphonic Band & numerous Broadway musicals such as Fiddler on the Roof, The Music Man, Sweeney Todd, Annie & others. He served as cornet soloist of the Orlando Concert Band from 1993 - 1997 & was later featured soloist with the Elkhart Municipal Band on their sister-city tour of England. He currently performs with VibeNation, the Tom Milo Big Band, Rob Parton’s JazzTech Big Band, the Tom Matta Big Band, the Northshore Concert Band, Quintessence, and the South Bend Symphony. A co-founder of the National Trumpet Competition, Powell now also serves as Associate Director & as a member of the NTC Executive Board. He remains a frequent clinician and guest artist, having presented at the 2011 International Trumpet Guild Conference, as well as at numerous high schools, universities & regional trumpet festivals. After several years doing double duty as a product design manager within the corporate music industry, he started his own company in 2005 where he continues as designer & builder of his own line of custom, hand-built trumpets, flugelhorns, and other brass instruments.
Trumpet Scholarships Available ~
The Robert Panerio Trumpet Scholarship was created through the generorsity of Robert and Charlotte Panerio in the 1990s and has been awarded as an annual scholarship to promising trumpet students. In 2008, the scholarship monies were used to establish an endowment that will serve studio for years to come. Your gifts will be of great service to the trumpet studio and will recognize the life's work of Professor Panerio.
