Preparatory Strings at Central

Children playing violinsThe Preparatory Strings Program consists of seven string ensembles and one full symphony orchestra made up of students from 6 years old through college. The majority of students start out in either Early Beginners or Beginning Strings and then progress up to the Kittitas Valley Youth Orchestra. However, students may join the beginning groups or audition for the intermediate and advanced groups during any quarter. This program provides a great opportunity for Ellensburg youth to not only improve their technical and musical skills, but to meet other youth involved with music.

With the exception of Early Beginners, the ensembles meet for 2 hours a week and are taught by Central Washington University students. One of the advantages of this program is the extremely high CWU ratio to Prep students, with an average of one teacher to every four Prep students. This means that there is a great amount of one-on-one instruction and detailed attention to each student, unlike other programs that have fewer teachers to help the students. This program is beneficial to both Central students and youth in the community. Feel free to explore this web site to learn more about this program. If you have any questions, please contact the Program Director at prepstrings@cwu.edu. Thanks for your interest!

Our Mission
  • Child playing violinTo provide CWU students, in music education and other majors, with an opportunity to develop teaching skills in a supportive learning environment supervised by master teachers.
  • To serve the youth of Kittitas Valley by providing string instruction in group classes and conducted ensembles, from beginning to advanced.
  • To inspire interest in string education among college students and the community, and enrich the musical community at large through performances and other activities.
  • The purpose of each orchestra in the Prep Program is to foster musical, technical, and artistic skills. More importantly, the staff strives to build the self-confidence of each student, discovering and developing his/her skills and abilities to contribute to the success of a team.
