Piano students gain valuable teaching experience working with the young from the Ellensburg community through our Preparatory Division. The Piano Pedagogy course offered by Dr. Pickett undertakes an extensive overview of piano teaching methods and develops a thoughtful, comprehensive approach to teaching with each student.
The piano students are given opportunities to perform in concert halls that are acoustically some of the finest in the world. The Concert and Recital halls are equipped with three new Steinway model D pianos that are expertly maintained by Central’s Piano technician, Harry Whitaker. In addition, pianists are able to work on new grand pianos in four studios that are exclusively designated for piano studio members.
In recent years, the piano students of Dr. John Pickett have met with successes in competitions. A winner and runner-up in the Washington State Music Teachers State solo competition come from the studio of Dr. Pickett. Students of Dr. Pickett are currently enrolled in doctoral programs. at Arizona State University and The University of Washington.
With many solo, small and large ensemble experiences encompassing a wide variety of styles and repertoire, the performance opportunities provided by the Music Department combine well with the “learn by doing” approach offered in private lessons and studio classes. In addition to solo and small group performance opportunities, CWU piano students may be involved in the following ensembles.
