Living Learning Communities (LLCs) at Central Washington University bridge students' academic interests with their residence hall living experience.

Students with common academic interests live together in the same residence hall and develop personal and academic relationships with other students and faculty from a field of study. Students participate in out-of-classroom enrichment activities that support their academic pursuits.

Music LLC

There are 80-90 music students in LLC every year and growing. These students literally get to experience music via peer surroundings. Programs are geared towards furthering music education by seeing live performances, like the Pacific Northwest Ballet, attending rhythm workshops, Lionel Hampton, and music theory assistance. The living component includes friendships gained through the exposure to a music-dominated community.

Alford Montgomery is the dormitory for the Freshman music LLC, and Sue Lombard is the upper classman dormitory. Sue Lombard Hall, built in 1927, is one of the oldest and perhaps one of the "grandest" residences on Central's campus. Sue Lombard is a newly renovated residence hall on University Way, next to Kamola Hall. Sue Lombard Hall offers suite-style accommodations with private baths and 102 beds. Sue Lombard is the home to education, music, and natural sciences/STEP Living Learning Communities. Al-Monty is a primarily first year hall set in the beautiful northern part of campus. Al-Monty is home to close to 180 students as well as the Music Living Learning Community and the Recreation Theme Community.

The Music LLC provides residence hall students an opportunity to interact with faculty outside of the classroom. Formal and informal activities are designed to enrich each student’s musical/academic learning opportunity. An emphasis will be placed on fostering a supportive atmosphere that is sympathetic to the rigors of the music curriculum.

“It’s kind of cool to have musical discussions with people. I can say Aaron Copland and everyone will know who I am talking about.”

Nathan Ott
Alford Montgomery LLC resident.

“The music LLC is exactly what the title is. A living learning community whose primary focus is to assist the musical education of music majors living in the residence halls.”
Dannel Fischer
LLC community programmer.

"A Living Learning Community such as the Music LLC affords the opportunity for students and faculty to share ideas and enthusiasm about music in a more casual setting. This personalized approach allows a truly free and open approach to the educational experience at Central."
Clara Cook
Music LLC resident

Being part of a community is about making connections with others who have common interests. Community is about getting involved and contributing to something larger than yourself.
