Jeffrey Snedeker will present a faculty recital of music featuring the French horn. Inspired by the College of Arts and Humanities 2013-2014 theme, the program will consist of music that presents philosophical, temporal, practical, geographical, and personal perspectives on the theme of “Here and There.” Olivier Messiaen’s Appel interstellaire (Interstellar Call) poses the question of humanity’s place in the universe. James Beckel’s Primitive/Modern, inspired by the September 11, 2001, tragedy, uses the horn with electronic sounds to explore the connection between past and present. Henri Tomasi’s virtuosic Concerto is presented for practical reasons; Snedeker will also perform this piece with the Tacoma Youth Symphony Orchestra in November. The closest country to the geographical antipode of Ellensburg is South Africa, so a movement from a sonata for horn and piano by South African composer Hendrick Hofmeyr will be performed, countered with a new work by CWU faculty member Mark Goodenberger. The recital will close with a few personal favorites that fit the theme. The concert is free and open to the public.
