Masters in the Art of Teaching Mathematics

Educational Mission and Goals of the Program

  • Recruit mathematical educators that have an interest in addressing the reform called for by the National Research Council and State of Washington Academic Achievement and Accountability Commission.
  • Enable mathematics teachers to improve their ability to teach mathematics while achieving their professional certification.
  • Increase the conceptual and procedural understanding of the main mathematics strands.
  • Equip and enable mathematics teachers to use problem solving and modeling to teach key mathematics concepts and procedures.
  • Develop and enable mathematics teachers to teach mathematics as a connection of concepts and procedures.
  • Use technology appropriately to teach mathematics.
  • Use pedagogical methods that engage students in doing meaningful mathematics.
  • Write and evaluate curriculum that aligns with the NCTM standards and Washington State EALRs.

Program Objectives

  • Increase the conceptual and procedural mathematical understanding.
  • Develop a more connected understanding of mathematical concepts and their connections to applications.
  • Develop, prepare, and equip mathematics teachers to be leader in mathematics education reform.
  • Use the problem solving and modeling to teach mathematics.
  • Use technology appropriately to teach mathematics.
  • Understand and use pedagogical methods designed to engaging students in meaningful mathematics.
  • Write and evaluate curriculum at the course, district, and state levels.
