ELLENSBURG, Wash. (March 6, 2012) — When the Kittitas County Food Access Coalition (KCFAC) needed help interpreting results of a survey, a group of Central Washington University math students stepped up to the plate.
According to CWU math professor Dominic Klyve (KLEE-vee), the KCFAC instituted a countywide survey to help them understand the level of "access to healthy food and understanding of nutrition" for citizens in Kittitas County. Unfortunately, the person who was planning to do the analysis left before the results could be interpreted.

"As a part of a National Science Foundation Grant, 'Community-Based-Inquiry and Critical Thinking,' my students needed to be involved in a project of real significance to our community," said Klyve. "My statistics students analyzed this data as their big project for the term. They are also submitting written reports, which I will compile and send to the county for publication."
Klyve's students will give oral presentations to the KCFAC at 4:00 p.m. on March 8 in Dean Hall 103.
The purpose of the Kittitas County Community Food Assessment was to compile information about the assets, resources, and needs of the county related to access to healthy foods, hunger, food security/insecurity, and the local food system.
Interpreting the data collected in the survey will raise awareness about community food issues among policymakers and the community as a whole, increase participation in, and inform the direction of, future community food efforts.
