The Faculty Development and Research Council (FDRC) of the School of Graduate Studies and Research has established a limited number of competitive Graduate Student Summer Research or Creative Activity Fellowships to assist Central Washington University graduate students with their research, creative and scholarly projects. These activities are expected to benefit the student scholar, faculty mentor, and the university.
The applicant must be accepted in or enrolled in a CWU graduate program and in good academic standing at the time of application. The student must not have completed the graduate degree before the period of the award. Applications must be endorsed by a faculty mentor. The student must be registered for either summer or fall quarter.
The Graduate Student Summer Research or Creative Activity Fellowship provides a fellowship of $3500 for 10 weeks of research between June 16 and Sept 1. Fellowships will be paid semi-monthly on the 1st and 15th for a total of five checks beginning mid-June. During the 10 week research period, CWU and outside employment should be limited to half-time to allow adequate time to fulfill research commitments.
This fellowship is intended to support any scholarly activity by a graduate student that has good potential for significance outside of Central Washington University. In other words, the activity should have realistic potential to lead to dissemination (e.g., publications, presentations, exhibitions, performances) and/or to further research or funding outside of CWU. Scholarly works that are related to completion of degree requirements, including theses or master's projects, are eligible for the fellowship so long as they have this potential for visibility beyond the university. If your research involves humans or animals you will have to submit a protocol for approval by the Human Subjects Review committee or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, IACUC.
Each applicant must obtain the application form, complete it, and return it with one complete application packet (paper copy) to the Graduate School and email a PDF attachment of the complete application packet to the graduate school at firstname.lastname@example.org by April 15 at 5:00 PM. Late submissions will not be considered.
Each application must be reviewed, approved and signed by the applicant's faculty mentor.
The application must include:
COVER SIGNATURE PAGE: The cover page must be complete with all signatures before submission, including approval by your thesis chair. It is a courtesy to submit the application to your graduate committee chair for signature at least a week before the deadline.
ABSTRACT: After the cover page, attach a typed description of your project using double spacing and 12-point, Times New Roman font. This attachment must be no longer than 150 words and should summarize your project.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: After the abstract, attach a typed description of your project using double spacing and 12-point, Times New Roman font. This attachment must be no longer than 5 single-sided pages (1" margins), including references, which may be single spaced. There is no restriction on the use of figures or tables in your application narrative; however, they must be included in the 5 single-sided page limitation for the proposal and follow the double-spacing and 12-point, Times New Roman font requirements for all the accompanying captions.
Attach a letter of support from your faculty advisor.
Organize the project description using the following headings:
1. Scholarly/Artistic Significance—objectives and expected significance of the project; relation to present state of knowledge in the field, to previous work by the student, and to related work by others.
2. Action Plan/Methods—outline of the general plan of work including the methodology, experimental methods or procedures to be followed.
3. Extramural Potential—assessment of the potential for this work to have significance beyond the university (e.g., to lead to dissemination through publications, presentations, exhibitions, performances and/or to further research or funding outside of CWU). Provide information such as anticipated further development of your project, dissemination venue or funding source, and likelihood for success.
4. References Cited—relevant literature must be cited and listed in a reference section at the end.
After the full project description, attach a letter of support from faculty advisor.
VITAE: After the full project description and letter of support attach a curriculum vitae or resume (up to 2 pages) emphasizing appropriate previous education and research, and scholarly or artistic achievements.
If results of this project are published, it is expected that you will include in the publication the following statement: "This investigation (report, study, etc.) was (partially) supported by the Research Fund of Central Washington University, Ellensburg, Washington."
Review and Evaluation of Applications
The FDRC of the Graduate School will review each proposal and provide recommendations as to funding. Criteria for the evaluation of the proposals include:
• Abstract/Summary (10 points)
• Scholarly/Artistic Significance (40 points)
• Action Plan/Methods (40 points)
• Extramural Potential (10 points)
Recommendations on proposals are made by a vote of the FDRC.
Notification: The FDRC will review the proposals and notification to applicants will generally occur within one month following each announced deadline date.
Fellowship recipients will submit a detailed report of activities and results to the Chair of the FDRC within three months after the end of the appointment. Appointees are required to provide the graduate office copies of any publications or grant applications that result from work conducted under the appointment.
