Faculty Appointments

for Research or Creative Activity or New Program Development

2018 - 2019 Academic Year Application Deadlines:

Academic year appointments: January 17, 2019

Summer appointments: March 7, 2019

The Faculty Development and Research Committee (FDRC) has established a limited number of competitive Faculty Release Appointments to assist CWU faculty members with their current research or creative activity. There are also funds available for developing new graduate degree program, specialization or certificates.

Awards will be prioritized and are highly competitive.  Appointments are available for the academic year as work load unit buy out or summer quarter for up to $5,000.

The applicant must have a full-time, continuing academic year faculty appointment at the rank of assistant professor or higher. Applicants on professional leave or unpaid leave of absence are not eligible for academic year appointments. It is expected that the faculty member shall return to CWU for one academic year following completion of the Faculty Research Appointment. Applications must be endorsed by the department chair and college dean.

The maximum award available for a faculty member is release time up to 12 work load units in one quarter during the ACADEMIC YEAR. The faculty member’s home department will receive the appropriate reimbursement based on the CBA regulations to provide adjunct replacement. Appointees are faculty employees of CWU regardless of their physical location, with the usual responsibilities pertaining to on-campus employment. For summer appointments, faculty will receive up to $5,000 less faculty benefits deductions.

1. The applicant should expect to utilize the campus of CWU as home base during the appointment period unless appropriate justification for off-campus or CWU Center activities is provided in the application.
2. Priority will be given to applicants who have not received a Faculty Release/Graduate Program Development appointment in the previous fiscal year. A faculty member can receive no more than one appointment in a given fiscal year.
4. For those applicants who have received previous FDRC funding, past performance, as judged by the quality of the final report and publications, will be a consideration.
5. Projects that are related to completion of degree requirements are not eligible.
