BA Mathematics: Teaching Secondary

Central Washington University‘s Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics: Teaching Secondary degree is available to community college graduates with a two-year direct transfer agreement (DTA) associate degree. Successful completion of degree and other teacher certification requirements will lead to a Washington State teaching certificate with endorsement in secondary mathematics. Students enrolled in this major are required to complete the professional education program requirements offered through the department of education in addition to the requirements of the department of mathematics.

Admission Requirements

  • Meet CWU's general education requirements through a community college direct transfer agreement (DTA), associate degree, or equivalent coursework from any state accredited college or university.
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.5 and a C or better in Calculus I, II and III from any state accredited college or university.
  • A grade of C or better in a course equivalent to CWU’s MATH 311 (Statistical Concepts and Methods).
  • Either one year of study of a single foreign language at any state accredited college or university or two years of study of a single foreign language at the high school level.
  • Admission to CWU’s Teacher Certification program (www.cwu.edu/teacher-certification for application process and materials), including a minimum GPA of 3,0 for the most recent 45 quarter credits, and passing all portions of the WA Educator Skills Test - Basic (WEST-B). How to Apply

There are five steps to complete when applying to the Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics: Teaching Secondary program at CWU-Lynnwood.

Step 1: Order one official transcript from each institution where you have completed coursework, including high school transcripts if necessary to demonstrate the fulfillment of the language requirement.

Step 2: Complete the application for admission to Central Washington University. You may apply by downloading the application form and mailing it to CWU-Lynnwood with your other application materials.

Step 3: Complete the application for admission to the CWU Mathematics: Teaching Secondary Program. The admission form may he found online at www.cwu.edu/teacher-certification and mailed to CWU-Lynnwood.

Step 4: Complete a reflective writing assignment. On a separate sheet of paper, using a word processor, answer the following three questions:

  1. What do you expect to get out of this program besides a teaching certificate?
  2. Why do you think you will be a good teacher?
  3. What type of mathematical proficiency does a high school teacher need?

Please keep your answer to each question under one page. The reflective writing sample has three purposes:

  1. to help you determine if this is the right program for you;
  2. to illustrate whether you understand and agree with the goals of the program; and
  3. to demonstrate whether you have the necessary writing skills to successfully complete the program.

Step 5: Schedule to take the Washington Educator Skills Test (WEST-B). The WEST-B is a basic skills test that is required for all students entering a teacher preparation program in Washington State. Your complete Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics: Teaching Secondary application materials must be postmarked by September 1 to be considered for admission to the upcoming cohort.
