For more than 100 years Central Washington University has provided educational opportunity to Washington state citizens. CWU was founded in 1891 as a "normal school" for "the training and education of teachers in the art of instructing and governing in the public schools of the state." Today CWU is a comprehensive regional university that provides high quality programs to nearly 10,000 people.
As a public servant, CWU takes very seriously the responsibility to be a careful steward of resources - both public and private. CWU is proud of its outstanding record of caring for facilities and conserving water and energy. Since 2001, CWU has cut natural gas consumption by 18 percent, electrical consumption by 14 percent, and water use by nearly five million gallons per year. The result is nearly $4 million in savings, an achievement that earned the Governor's Award for Excellence Energy Management.
CWU is helping to meet the tremendous demand for higher education in Washington state. As of fall 2006, more than 9700 (FTE) students will be working toward bachelor's or master's degrees at CWU campuses around the state. Our University Centers in
Des Moines,
Lynnwood,
Moses Lake,
Pierce County,
Wenatchee,
and Yakima partner with community colleges to enable students to earn their bachelor degrees in their own communities.
Washington's businesses also are valued partners, helping to shape educational opportunity at CWU by lecturing in classrooms, serving on advisory boards, and meeting with faculty and staff to discuss emerging needs and technology. By donating their time and resources, our business partners are helping CWU to develop and offer the educational programs students want and our economy needs.
CWU is helping sharpen our state's competitive edge by providing the education, insight, and training our economy and Washington residents need. CWU combines a strong liberal arts foundation with solid professional preparation. The result is university graduates who find careers in Washington soon after - and sometimes before - they complete our high quality programs.
The return on higher education investment benefits everyone. The return comes in taxes paid by higher-salaried college graduates and in sales and other taxes university employees pay. Because colleges and universities are in so many communities in the state, local economies benefit and so do the people who realize their education and career dreams.
