University Writing Center

Welcome to the Writing Center

The University Writing Center is a place to get connected with support for research, writing, and revision across all subjects.  Our location in Brooks Library allows you to connect with peer writing consultants in the same location you can get help from a research librarian.

Please come see us in Brooks Library 190. Appointments are recommended, but drop-ins are welcome. Follow us on social media, call us at 509-963-1270 or email to get connected with us.

Who can use the University Writing Center?

All students enrolled at CWU are eligible to receive help on writing assignments at the University Writing Center. You do not have to be working with a writing consultant to use the space.

What kind of help can I get at the University Writing Center?

Writing consultants will work with you wherever you are at in the writing process. Their goal is to support you as a writer and help you meet your goals. You do not have to be struggling to use the Writing Center services. Nationally, students who use Writing Centers tend to have higher GPAs than students who do not.

Why don't you proofread papers?

Our writing consultants will do their best to find grammatical errors in your papers if that is your main concern. However, we do not offer drop-off proofreading services. It is our mission to help writers learn necessary skills to be successful in future classes and in the workplace. During a grammar review session, our consultants will highlight egregious errors and explain how to fix the errors. If you have many errors in the same paper, it may take multiple visits for a consultant to help you. Your consultant will have you work on your own between visits to help you improve your proofreading skills.

Writing Center Mission Statement

Central Washington University is a community of scholars and writers who are supported by the Learning Commons Writing Center. Peer consultants guide students of all disciplines and all levels toward communication that will be effective in a global and diverse environment.
