Clive Rainey, the first volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, will be visiting Kittitas County for two days in September. During his visit, the Kittitas County Habitat for Humanity and the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement will host an event with Rainey at 7 p.m., Friday Sept. 27, 2013 in the CWU SURC Theatre. The event is free to attend.
· Rainey volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in April 1977, in Americus, Georgia.
· Rainey became Habitat for Humanity’s first director in Africa and later Director of Community Relations.
· In July 2010, Rainey retired to Guatemala, but remains active with Habitat for Humanity, speaking to affiliate organizations on the importance of planning for and working toward substantial increases in their own housing production and to create strong partnerships with other housing providers, local governments, civic groups, churches, and other organizations.
Since its inception in 1993, Kittitas County Habitat for Humanity has built 12 homes. In 2013, the organization is building two homes on adjacent lots. Moving forward, Kittitas County Habitat for Humanity hopes to build four or five houses a year—one for every 10,000 residents of Kittitas County.
Habitat for Humanity has 1,500 affiliates in the United States and 80 international organizations. Through the “Sweat Equity” philosophy in which the homeowners help build their homes, Habitat for Humanity has built 600,000 homes, serving more than 3 million people.
The Center for Leadership and Community Engagement works to foster public awareness and leadership for important local and global issues. It also provides support to non-profit initiatives and develops service-learning opportunities that motivate CWU students, staff and faculty to better their campus and community.
