In Memoriam: Dr. Michael Olivero

Dr. Michael Olivero


On July 16, the Department of Law & Justice lost a valued member and colleague, Dr. Michael Olivero. He joined Central Washington University in 1991. Dr. Olivero completed his PhD in Sociology at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and had been an Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice at the University of Texas-Pan American. He worked in policing, corrections and counseling. At CWU, he taught courses in corrections, correctional law, criminology, probation/parole, research methods, and juvenile delinquency. Dr. Olivero was promoted to Full Professor in 1991 and became the first chairperson in 1994 when the Department of Law & Justice was organized. He was an active researcher and scholar, consultant to various organizations, and academic engaged in service to the community, most recently as an guardian ad litem. Dr. Olivero had been on medical leave since December 2017. He will be fondly remembered by many people who knew him as a colleague, teacher, and friend over the years.
