Central Washington University's teacher certification program at Green River Community College - Kent Campus is designed to meet the needs of time- and place-bound students and the state's need for highly qualified math and science teachers. Graduates of this program will earn a baccalaureate degree with teacher certification in Elementary Education and Middle-level Science.
This seven-quarter, full-time program is a collaboration between CWU-Des Moines and Green River Community College and offered at Green River's Kent Campus at Kent Station. A cohort of students will begin classes each fall quarter and run continuously including summer quarter. Fall through spring quarter classes are held in the late afternoon and early evening; summer schedules vary with daytime classes. Students complete the program spring quarter of their second year and are encouraged to use spring quarter to start searching for permanent employment and/or substitute teaching. Students who complete the prerequisites in two years at a community college earn teaching certificates in about 21 months.
Central Washington University's teacher preparation program is accredited regionally and nationally. CWU promotes student understanding of scientific concepts relevant to the individual and to society and fosters an appreciation of scientific inquiry Students obtain a broad education covering a variety of content disciplines. Our constructivist teaching philosophy curriculum, and facilities support rich education experience with small class sizes, hands-on experience, regular interaction with expert faculty, and opportunities for research. Through cooperative partnerships with local school districts, students have the opportunity to develop practical teaching skills in real classrooms. Graduates of this program will become teachers who are leaders in science education reform efforts.
To obtain a BAEd in Elementary Education from this program, students need to enroll in and complete the Professional Education Program, Elementary Education Major, and Middle Level Science Teaching Minor (see catalog at www.cwu.edu/~catalogs for details). Students must complete the prerequisite courses with a grade of "C" or better prior to being admitted to the program.
