For more than forty years I have worked and gained experience as a leader, staff officer, and as an educator, trainer, and instructor at mid-management and leadership development schools and universities.

I currently serve as a lecturer and advisor for the Department of Information Technology and Administrative Management at CWU in the areas of: leadership and supervision courses, strategic management and policy, project management, and business communications at the undergraduate level, customer relations management, and prepared courses in leadership at the graduate level.

My past academic experience includes serving as the department chair while a professor of military science at Seattle University. In this position I was the program director responsible for developing undergraduate students in the areas of leadership character, organizational and operations management. As an instructor at a mid-career officer course I taught leadership, operational art and science, organizational management.

During my time at the United States Military Academy (West Point) I served as a University level psychology counselor responsible for personal leadership development of cadets as individuals and in groups. On a second tour I held the position of Deputy City Manager serving the West Point, NY, community.

I have twenty-eight years of service, commanding at the company and field grade levels as a platoon leader, two company commands, and as a battalion commander. Additionally, I have served on General Officer staffs as an Aide-de-Camp for a Corps Logistics Command, Chief of Operations at the Division and Battalion levels in the 101st Airborne Division, and as a Deputy Chief of Operations on the I (US) Corps general staff. I held Executive Officer staff positions at the Brigade and Company levels. As an Officer, I graduated from the Army's Command and General Staff College, Officer Advanced (Mid-career) and Officer Basic (Entry-level) leadership, operational art and science, and organizational management courses, and the Combined Arms Staff Service School preparing officers to perform at the executive staff level.

In the private industry sector I held positions as a program, region, and national director for an education company that provide web and on-site adult and youth programs. My experiential track record includes long-term success and achievement in the areas of fiscal management, human resources, operations, marketing, organizational training and operational and leadership program development.
My doctorate is from the School of Education at Seattle University, and I also hold two master’s degrees One is in Education and Counseling Psychology from Washington State University, and the other is in Business Management Science from Troy University.

  • Present the Lieutenant Colonel Philippe J. Upperman Inspirational Leadership Award. An annual award presented to the senior student in the Department who overcame adversity during their senior year, meeting standards as a scholar, athlete, and inspirational leader to their class.
