Study abroad with Peru and ITAM

The Department of Information Technology and Administrative Management (ITAM) is pleased to launch an exciting new study abroad experience available to all ITAMers, including current students and alumni. While first offered to ITAM students, all members of the CWU community are invited to participate in this life-changing experience.

Over the course of three weeks, participants will travel to Peru and:

  • Engage in service-learning by providing access to technology to students in remote areas
  • Experience the rich culture of Peru
  • Trek to Machu Picchu via the Lares Trek

One third of the time will focus on assisting with the modernization of elementary schools in the Inca Valley. Led by Dr. Bob Trumpy and in cooperation with Buen Power Peru, participants will travel to remote areas where they will install solar panels, set up internet access, and provide underprivileged students with access to laptops and curriculum software.

In this Ted Talk, Alicia Kozuch of Buen Power Peru, discusses the profound impact of bringing solar power to these rural  schools and villages.

Cultural Immersion

The journey will begin with a week in the vibrant city of Cusco, including visits to museums, tours, and presentations by local scholars. Once the capital of the Inca Empire, the city now contains a rich blend of history and culture including many pre-Columbian sites and numerous examples of Spanish colonial architecture.

The trip culminates in a trek to the famous Inca city of Machu Picchu. Considered to be one of the ultimate outdoor experiences, this adventure blends deep cultural interactions, archeology, and stunning scenery. Participants will travel the Lares Trail (approximately 20.5 miles) and end at Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu. The next day they will bus up to enjoy a full day exploring this archeological wonder and World Heritage Site.
