First, I would like to take the opportunity for you to learn a little bit about me. I was born and raised on a dairy and crop farm in Iowa.  During high school I participated in sports, music, drama, church activities, and part-time work.  I was the only daughter out of three children to attend college, attending the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for both my bachelor’s and master’s degree. In 2010 I graduated from North Dakota State University with a doctorate in Education.  This is my second year of teaching at Central Washington University.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

I have had the opportunity to gain work and volunteer experience in a wide variety of settings and communities on national level.  I have had the work titles of Recreation Therapist, Senior Activity Center Director, Community Services Director, Human Services Project Coordinator, Six Sigma Black Belt, and Project Manager.  Despite diverse job responsibilities, these roles share a common value of making a difference in the lives of children, families, and individuals.  In addition to teaching I am Sr. Consultant at 0 Degree which specializes in cultivating peak performance in organizations and individuals by using operational excellence (lean & six sigma) tools and techniques.

PERSONAL INFORMATION

After college, I met my husband, Tom, who recently took a job as President / CEO of Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake, WA in May 2013. Tom and I have been married for 27 years and are the proud parents of two wonderful young men, Joseph, 23 and Benjamin, 19.  Other family members include two Golden Retriever’s named Rowdy and Bear ages 9 years, and one tiger cat, Lexie, 7 My relationships with my family and friends are most important to me.

My greatest joy is watching my children participate in activities primarily sporting events including soccer, rugby, hockey, and baseball. As a family we enjoy traveling, eating dinner, watching movies, downhill skiing and hiking together! I enjoy working out at the local fitness center in Moses Lake attending classes, lifting weights, and biking.  I love taking my dogs for walks out in the desert.  Other interests include eating and baking. I like all kinds of food, especially Indian, Thai, and Mexican as long as I can enjoy it with others.  I love pie, all types of pie, so much that I get “Happy Birthday” pies rather than cake! My most favorite pie is my recipe for French Silk Pie, it’s just soooo good!

My Teaching Philosophy

This is the basic foundation of my teaching philosophy:  Martin Luther King’s famous quote,  “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education”.

My job is to provide direction and tools to help students ask the right questions to move to a higher level of learning. My hope through my teaching is to provide more hands-on learning opportunities and to help college students successfully make the transition from college into the workplace.
