In this course we will learn about some famous (and maybe not so famous) places in the US, especially Washington State parks. Students will teach us about places in the United States they are interested in and I, Randi, will teach us about places in Washington State.
In class time:
Learn about Parks, Places in the United States, especially the places we will visit on our field trips.
Outside of class:
Gather information about the United States and travel destinations. Talk to Americans.
Go to local and distant places on fieldtrips. On Friday afternoons or on the week-ends. Keep a journal and gather information, photos, items for our scrapbooks.
- Keep a journal about the field trips.
- Quizzes on information/vocabulary we are learning in class.
- Plan our "BIG" trip and our smaller trips.
- Presentation about a place in the US (your choice).
- Final Project (10 page scrapbook showing what you saw, did, and learned in this class.)
We will learn about the United States and Washington State by using our textbook, getting materials from travel agencies and the National Park Service, talking to Americans, using the library and the Internet. We will take some trips, including a trip to the wonderful and unique Olympic Peninsula. You will practice all language skills by reading about places, talking to Americans, and planning trips for yourself and making presentations for your classmates.
*This class will only meet three days a week because some of our class time will be spent going on field trips on Fridays and the week-ends.
If you are between 5-10 minutes late for class two times, it will be counted as an absence. If you are more than 10 minutes late you will be counted as absent and will not be admitted to the class on that day. If you have 4 absences, your grade will be reduced by one letter grade (A becomes B). You will need to meet with the director, Steve Horowitz, and explain your absences. If you know you will be absent, talk to me before hand and make up the work you have missed.
You will be grades on the following:
- Attendance and participation: 25% (You may not miss field trips)
- Assignments, Quizzes, Journal: 50%
- Presentation: 10%
- Final Project: 15% (10 page scrapbook showing what you learned in this class.
