Université d'Orléans

Orléans, France

Located approximately one hour by train from Paris, the city of Orléans sits on the northern bend of the Loire River and is part of France’s famed wine-producing Loire Valley region, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Orléans and the area around it have a long history of settlement, dating back at least to pre-Roman Celtic tribes, and its location on the river has made it a strategic point and an attractive prize in times of conflict. For her part in lifting the English siege of the city during the Hundred Years’ War, Joan of Arc is called The Maid of Orléans.

One of Europe’s oldest universities, Université d'Orléans was founded in 1306 and boasts such notable alumni as Pope Clement V, Jean Calvin and Moliere. The university has occupied its current location since 1961 and is located near local centers of three of France’s prestigious research institutes: the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the French Geological Survey (BRGM), and the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). Each year, the university welcomes 14,000 students, including 2,000 international students.
