State-Funded Headcounts and FTE

State-funded enrollments are those for which the legislature allocates operating funds to the university. The great majority of enrollments in the university's degree-granting academic departments are state-funded. The university is not allocated operating funds for enrollments in R.O.T.C., continuing education, college in the high school, or English as a second language. Consequently, enrollments in these programs are excluded from state-funded FTE totals. Students enrolled only in non-state-funded programs are excluded from state-funded headcounts.

State-funded headcounts and FTE totals are indicative of the scale of the university's principal degree-granting programs and are useful for comparing higher education institutions within Washington.

Headcounts of Students Reported to IPEDS

IPEDS (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System) is a national repository for data about institutions of higher education in the United States. IPEDS counts include all students enrolled in courses creditable toward a degree or a certificate and full-time remedial students accepted into a degree program. Consequently, IPEDS counts may include students participating only in non-state-funded programs such as R.O.T.C, continuing education, and college in the high school.

The IPEDS headcount is indicative of the total number of students earning college credits through the university. IPEDS data, which are prepared in accordance with common national standards, are generally to be used for reporting enrollments to organizations operating nation-wide and for comparing higher education institutions in different states.
