A "growing" appreciation for his skills and diligence has earned Brad Varnum, grounds and nursery service specialist, Employee of the Month honors. Varnum is responsible for the installation, design, maintenance, and operation of all manual and computer-controlled campus irrigation systems. His position is also responsible for general landscape maintenance, equipment operations, and snow/ice removal. In addition, he is also responsible for completion of utility locaters for Facility Management. His nominators noted that Brad started out as a cyclical worker for seven months of the year. He was later brought on full time. Originally hired as an irrigation worker, Brad took on new duties that have allowed grounds maintenance to continue as effectively as possible. He re-trained and learned new skills to perform as a grounds worker. He was even given the area that included the president's residence to maintain. In winter, one of his duties is to hand-shovel all of the walkways that the tractors cannot plow, especially the handicap ramps. "Brad also deals well with changing working conditions," noted a colleague. "He can fill any position at a moment's notice and is always happy to help anyone. "He always has a smile. And all his work is done by hand, even when it is six degrees out."
