Mexican Cultural Celebration, The Day of the Dead: Altares y Ofrendas
Halloween goes cross-cultural at CWU this year! Art professor Joan Cawley-Crane and several Central Latino students will celebrate the Day of the Dead with collaborative artwork as a part of Altares y Ofrendas, meaning altars and offerings. Their work will be displayed throughout campus and Ellensburg Wednesday, Oct. 31 through Thursday, Nov. 1.
The Day of the Dead is a Hispanic holiday to celebrate and remember the lives of loved ones who have died. Families celebrate by gathering to create ofrendas, memorials for the dead. The imagery of Dia de los Muertos is striking and recognizable, often consisting of decorated skulls and marigolds. The student artists will no doubt bring these elements to life on campus, making this year's Halloween not just about the candy.
