Patrick Carpenter—a Spanish major and a Douglas Honors College student--has been chosen to receive a $1,000 Washington Association for Language Teaching (WAFLT) Excel Scholarship based on his language achievements and interest in becoming a teacher.  Congratulations, Patrick!

The Inspirational Leadership Certificate is presented to a person or persons selected by the Washington Association for Language Teaching (WAFLT) board who has demonstrated leadership and inspiration to others in the world language fields. This certificate recognizes important contributions in promoting, organizing, supporting, defending, lobbying, or planning some important aspect of study of world languages and/or cultures.

WAFLT recognizes all of Dr. Lee's leadership in world languages over the years.  His accomplishments are too many to list, but those that stand out to us in particular include his service hosting WAFLT conferences and his work with Heritage learners.

Sergio Madrid, a McNair Scholar majoring in Philosophy and minoring in Law and Justice, and Spanish, has been selected to receive the 2015 Associate Dean of Student Achievement Award.

Since he came to Central Washington University, Sergio has been committed to improving the campus community. He is a founding member of the Academic Achievement Leadership Council (AALC) and a Community Service Officer for E.M.P.I.R.E. Sergio has also participated in Citizenship Days in Pasco and Yakima, which are workshops sponsored by Washington New Americans in which volunteer immigration attorneys and interpreters offer free assistance with citizenship applications.

Maggie Nelson ’12, English and Spanish major, and former Cultural Ambassador in Spain, has been accepted to the master’s programs in English at Oregon State University, University of Texas, San Antonio, Central Washington University, and Western Washington University.

Maggie chose the program at Western Washington University, where she will focus on feminist theory and Latin@ cultural production.
