The Musicfest Northwest festival selected their top Young Artists last week, with CWU's Leah Thomas taking the number one seat as the winning brass performer.  The Young Artist Division Winners were then invited to play with the Spokane Symphony at the Bing Crosby Theatre on May 13, 2015. The memorized piece, Tartini, Trumpet Concerto in D major, was played on a piccolo trumpet.

Leah is a sophomore at Central and has studied trumpet for 7 years.

MUSIC faculty professors Joe Brooks and Vijay Singh performed at The Seasons in Yakima Oct. 6, 2013. The program, titled "Autumn Leaves", featured music themed around the Fall season. Brooks played clarinet featuring works by Finzi, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms. Singh sang songs by Purcell, Vaughan Williams, Schubert, Brahms, and CWU's own John Pickett. Both performers finished the concert with a touch of jazz to the delight of the audience.

Vijay Singh, Music, guest conducted the Delaware All-State Mixed Choir at the 2014 Delaware Music Educators Association conference February 21-22nd in Seaford, DE. The 140 voice choir was comprised of auditioned high school students from throughout the state of Delaware. Singh conducted the East Coast premiere of his composition "Seeking the Way" as part of the program.

Vijay Singh, MUSIC, conducted the Oklahoma All-State Jazz Choir Jan.9-11, 2014 in Oklahoma City. The All-State group was comprised of 24 auditioned singers and 4 rhythm section players selected from across the state, and their program included two of Singh's compositions/arrangements.

Vijay Singh and Gary Weidenaar, MUSIC, conducted and provided clinics at the 6th Annual Guys Got 2 Sing workshop in Everett, WA October 26th. Both conducted during the final concert, and Singh premiered a new composition written especially for the occasion, titled "Victory". Singh then performed with the a cappella quartet Just 4 Kicks at the final concert. Six CWU male students also participated in the event! CWU's Men;s Choir, directed by Dr. Scott Peterson, has been invited to be a guest group at next year's event!

St. Francis Welcomes Jeanne and Larry Vote as Music Directors GREAT FALLS, VA (10/17/13) – St. Francis Episcopal Church in Great Falls, Va., has welcomed Jeanne and Larry Vote as new directors of music for the church. Both Jeanne and Larry have extensive backgrounds in music, as performers, conductors, musical directors, and educators. Jeanne Vote most recently served as minister of music and organist at Middleham/St. Peter’s Parish in Lusby, Md. She has also served as director of academic advising and ADA advocate at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and as a classroom and music teacher for several public and private schools.

An accomplished organist, pianist, and harpsichordist, Jeanne’s performance experience includes ten years with the Maryland Bach Aria Group and several years as harpsichordist and chamber organist for the Alba Music Festival in Italy. She holds a B.A. in music education from Central Washington University, with certifications in K-12 music and K-6 classroom...
