Anthony Gabriel is completing his 28th year of full-time teaching, having arrived at CWU in 2000, following a 5 year stint at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and a 2 year position at Western Washington University. Born and raised in the Fraser Valley, B.C., Anthony is another one of our broadly-trained geographers, with a B.A. in Geography and History from Trinity Western University, a Masters of Science in Geography and Regional Planning from Western Washington University, and a PhD in Geography from the University of Guelph. His main teaching interests are in environmental geography, including courses on resource analysis, ecosystem geography, coastal environments, and wetland analysis. Both his Masters and Ph.D. programs emphasized both the theoretical and empirical study of the dynamic interrelationships between biophysical processes within the socio-economic systems in which these processes occur. He is continuing to develop, apply, and test systematic techniques to evaluate restrictions and benefits in the use of biophysical systems such as wetlands, shorelines, and watersheds. His research has involved a large number of undergraduate and graduate students, primarily addressing the ecological analysis and management of lake, river and coastal ecosystems. Recent research topics include assessment of riparian wetland losses and functions, shoreline hazards and inventories, the ecological impacts of shoreline protection, and the limnology of Soap Lake, Washington.
