President Bill Clinton signed GEAR UP into law in October, 1998.
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness For Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a nationwide effort to encourage ALL students to pursue and succeed in some form of post-secondary education.
GEAR UP is grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education with support from the government, local communities, schools, colleges, universities, and the private sector.
MOSAIC2 ( Moving our Students Academically into College and Careers) is a 7 year STEM (Science, Technology, engineering and Math) focused grant.
In the 2011 school year, GEAR UP became available to all too all 6th and 7th grade students attending schools that participate in the MOSAIC2 GEAR UP program.
MOSAIC2 GEAR UP will provide services to students in this cohort through the 2018 school year. This means those in 7th grade will be in the first year of college.
Additional GEAR UP objectives include to increase parent involvement, professional development for teachers, encourage community involvement, and collaboration with school staff.
GEAR UP provides field trips to colleges and universities, residential STEM camps at CWU, College Preparation Conferences and Workshops, after school enrichment and tutoring programs, homework assistance, EOC and HSPE preparation, community learning opportunities, leadership opportunities, community service opportunities, career and college exploration, and access to technology.
The GEAR UP programs trains high school students to serve as tutors and mentors in the GEAR UP program.
