Provost/Vice President of Academic & Student Life
CWU is engaged now in a search for a Provost / Vice President for Academic and Student Life, a university leadership position in the Pacific Northwest that supports the success of faculty, staff, and students.
Similar to other provost positions in Washington state, the university’s chief academic officer reports directly to the president, and serves as a member of the president's Cabinet.
The provost works in collaboration with other executive leaders, faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders to provide visionary leadership, strategic planning, policy direction, and management for student and academic endeavors.
As the Vice President of the Division of Academic and Student Life, the provost manages a total budget of nearly $125 million, which includes a direct operating budget of approximate $2.5 million. Funds dedicated to core instructional activities are managed within the context of Responsibility-center Management (RCM) and Activity-based Budgeting (ABB).
As a university executive, the provost oversees more than 135 dual-credit, undergraduate, and graduate programs on the residential campus in Ellensburg, at eight learning centers in Washington, and CWU’s online “Campus.”

About the Role
- Five years of senior-level administrative experience in higher education;
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and diversity in hiring and program development;
- Experience leading, directing, or overseeing university or programmatic accreditations;
- Experience with academic budgeting and planning processes with a demonstrated understanding of the financial and operational drivers of performance at a comprehensive university;
- A record of teaching and scholarly/creative accomplishments suitable for a tenured appointment at the rank of Full Professor in an academic department of the university;
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups across the university;
- Doctorate or terminal degree from a recognized regionally accredited institution.
Working under general direction of the president, the incumbent will independently plan and organize work assignments. The provost collaborates with other vice presidents on priority projects. Projects and specific tasks may be assigned by the supervisor either verbally or in writing. Work is reviewed periodically to ensure department goals are being met.
- Demonstrated success in working with faculty on academic and university issues under the principles of shared governance;
- A record of managing growth and increasing student retention;
- Demonstrated experience in activity-based budgeting (ABB) and
- Responsibility-center management (RCM);
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate and respond to the changing regulatory, demographic and political landscapes of higher education;
- A record of collaborative administrative leadership experience in higher education;
- Superb communication skills and strong emotional intelligence;
- Demonstrated success in data-driven decision making and project management;
- Demonstrated success in working with individuals from all walks of life;
- A record of enhancing the quality and effectiveness of graduate programs;
- Experience in working in a multi-campus environment and/or experience leading and overseeing off-campuses learning centers and/or satellite and on-line campuses;
- Experience working in a unionized academic environment and with collective bargaining.
