English 101 Exemption Exam

General Information: Currently the English department offers an exemption exam for English 101. This exam is offered once each quarter during the academic year, usually on the second day of classes at 2:00 p.m. If you are enrolled full-time at CWU, you may take the exam if you meet the eligibility requirements listed below.

Eligibility: You are eligible to take the English 101 exam if you are eligible to register for English 101.

Pre-registration: You must pre-register for the exams by signing up in the English department (L&L 423). Only one course may be challenged at a time. If you fail the exam you may retake it the next time it is offered. Specifics about where and when the exam will take place are available from the English department (963-1546).

Exam Procedures: During the two-hour exam, you are asked to read an essay, summarize it, and develop a response to the author's ideas in an essay of your own. Generally, essays should be 500 words long.

Scoring: A team of readers from the English Departmentwill score the exams; to pass, an exam must earn unanimous passing scores. The essays are read for excellence, not competence. If you would like to review the grading criteria, please contact Loretta Gray, general education coordinator (963-1540)

What to Bring to the Test: You will need to bring a pencil or pen, paper, and picture identification. Plan to spend the full two hours reading, writing, and revising.

You will not be permitted to use a dictionary, thesaurus, or other reference during the exam.

Exam Results: Generally, it takes about two weeks to complete the evaluation of the exams. You will be notified of the results via e-mail. If you pass the exam, the department will notify the Registrar of the exam results, and you will receive a letter from the department confirming your exemption. If you pass the exam, you will not receive credit for the course; you will simply not have to take the course to graduate.

Note: We do not have an exemption exam for ENG 102.
