The Central Washington University (CWU) Master of Science degree in Engineering Technology (MSET) is a multi-disciplinary program of study to prepare graduates from Industrial Technology (IT), Engineering Technology (ET), or engineering disciplines for superior professional practice (as opposed to customary masters programs specializing in narrow engineering field specialties). Educational objectives include technology advances, technology management practices, and analytic techniques intended to support professional practice.
Four population groups have been identified as benefiting from the master's program: recent graduates from engineering and technological degree-granting institutions; professionals in the engineering workforce; faculty members in two- and four-year institutions, and technology education teachers.
CWU currently offers the MSET program for working professionals in the Puget Sound area at the CWU - Des Moines Center (Building 29 on the campus of Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington) and at the University Centers at Everett Station (in downtown Everett, Washington). The Everett classes are expected to move to the CWU - Lynnwood Center (on the campus of Edmonds Community College in Edmonds) in the Fall of 2006.
The courses are taught to cohorts of students that ordinarily progress through the program together - one year of two courses each quarter; the summer off; and a second year of two courses each quarter to complete. The MSET degree may be completed by the end of two academic years without having to change from the Everett (in 2006 Lynnwood) or the Des Moines locations so long as the student registers for the courses scheduled for his/her own Cohort. Each course is taught once a week from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. to minimize commuting time. Course pairs are offered Tuesday and Thursday.
The MSET degree may also be obtained by taking coursework at the main campus in Ellensburg, Washington, where the courses are conducted in a more traditional manner.
