In an emergency call 911

Run-Hide-Fight

An active shooter is considered an individual actively engaged in the killing of or attempting to kill people in a confined or populated area. The use of firearms is typical in this act, however other items have been utilized to commit the crime. Active shooter incidents are often unpredictable and evolve quickly.

CWU has created this safety video to provide optional scenarios on what to do if an active shooter situation was to take place on campus. Each person must use individual discretion during an active shooter event as whether to run to safety, hide, or fight. However, best practices for surviving an active shooter event are listed below.

TRIGGER WARNING: Due to the nature of this video, viewer discretion is advised.

1. Run
a. Have an escape route and a plan in mind
b. Leave your belongings behind
c. Keep your hands visible
2. Hide
a. Hide in an area out of the assailants view
b. Block entry to your hiding place and lock the door
c. Silence your cell phone or any other noise making device
3. Fight
a. Commit to your act
b. As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger
c. Attempt to incapacitate the shooter
d. Act with physical aggression and throw items at the shooter
