These essays are the most important part of your application; the Application Review Committee will use them to gain a better understanding of you as a person. Please use them as an opportunity to demonstrate not just your ability to write well, but to demonstrate your critical thinking ability.

A well-written essay has demonstrated mastery in the following four areas:

Mechanics of Writing: Writer demonstrated mastery with mechanics of writing: spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.

Sentence & Paragraph Structure: Writer demonstrated mastery with sentence and paragraph fluency and use of transitional words and phrases throughout the writing.

Development of Ideas: Writer demonstrated mastery with development of ideas: prompt was properly addressed, critical thought was present, writing was coherent, & specific examples were used.

Awareness of Professional Audience: Writer demonstrated mastery with awareness of audience. Professional register was used; writing had global awareness and a multicultural perspective.

1. The motto of the William O. Douglas Honors College is sapere aude (dare to be wise). Tell us how you will “dare to be wise” in the context of an honors college education. Essay length should between 250 and 500 words.

2. Please choose one of the following questions as a prompt for your second essay. Minimum essay length is 500 words.

a. Life is made up of a series of successes and failures. Please write about how one of your failures led to eventual success. 

b. It has been said, "Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door."  What have you built and what do you want to build?
