Application for Admission: Core Curriculum

The Core Curriculum is for first-year students as well as transfer students needing to complete general education requirements. Transfer students should contact the DHC office and speak to an academic advisor regarding course requirements.

Essay Questions

We will use these essays to supplement your application and to gain a better understanding of who you are as a person as well as a student. There is no set length for this essay. What this essay will help to convey to us is your ability to express your thoughts in a clear, succinct yet thorough manner. Please choose one of the following questions to write about:

a. Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” What do you think is one of the greatest challenges or concerns facing humanity today and what will you do about it?

b. What does the study of the liberal arts (humanities and sciences) bring to today’s learning environment and your future possibilities as you make your way forward as a citizen-scholar in today’s global society?

c. French novelist Anatole France wrote: “An education isn’t how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It’s being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don’t.” What don’t you know?

Please use a maximum of 500 words to respond to the following question:

a. The motto of the William O. Douglas Honors College is “sapere aude” (dare to be wise). Tell us how you will “dare to be wise” in the context of an honors college education.
