The Advantage of Joining a Student Club

Joining a student club provides students the opportunity to meet new people, network in a career field, build leadership and organizational skills, and enhance in-class work.

CWU - Des Moines has active clubs related to program major and minors, and participation in them is encouraged through the academic program. Students are also encouraged to start clubs based on other interests such as:

  • political or religious affiliation
  • recreational activities
  • hobbies
  • social or ethnic affiliation

CWU students are also encouraged to visit the Highline Community College office for a complete list of student chartered clubs. CWU students are invited to check out those clubs and be involved in their efforts.

CWU Student Club Benefits

Official CWU student chartered clubs have the benefit of: reserving campus space to hold meetings, receiving a CWU email address, website page, and mail box at the center which they are affiliated. In addition, chartered clubs also have the opportunity to apply for funding for the following items:

  • Activity Sponsorship like banquets, meetings, and speakers
  • Conference Attendance including: registration, transportation and lodging
  • Advertising
  • Educational Supplies

Aside from applying for funding, chartered clubs may also participate in fundraising efforts. There are certain processes for fundraising. Please contact the Director of Westside Student Affairs for more information. Fundraising helps raise awareness of the club, as well as create a balance from which the club may draw petty cash funds. These funds may be used for:

  • Food for Meetings
  • Honorariums for Speakers
  • Supplies
  • Miscellaneous Expenses Associated With Operating A Chartered Club

Starting A Club

If the above list is not of interest, it is easy to begin a new club. Follow the steps below and begin taking advantage of the Student Club experience.
