The Central Theatre Ensemble and the CWU Department of Music have joined forces to bring to life the modern classic Les Misérables. The epic and emotional musical that has entertained audiences all over the world premieres in CWU's McConnell Auditorium on Friday, May 9.
Seven-year-old Kiley Moore, a second-grader at Valley View Elementary School in Ellensburg, plays two characters in the musical: Cosette and Éponine.
“The scenes are very powerful,” said Kiley, who’s been performing on stage for two years now. Her passion for acting doesn’t exactly run in the family, says mom Angela Moore, who confesses she and her husband shy from the limelight.
“I don’t know where I got it from,” Kiley said. “It just sneaked in.”
The aspiring movie star is already quite comfortable in front of an audience.
“The only time I get nervous is if people are booing and throwing paper airplanes at me,” Kiley said.
That’s not likely to happen.
Ben Sasnett, a senior in CWU’s musical theater BFA program, plays Jean Valjean.
Sasnett says a lot of different stories make up the show, which is “about redemption, about mercy, about striving to do what’s right.”
CWU freshman Nicholas J. Main, who plays Monsieur Thénardier, says Les Misérables has something for everybody.
“There’s the serious dramatic moments and there’s the comedic moments, but ... there are moments in the show that viscerally connect the emotion ... the human spirit,” Main said.
Les Misérables is based on a novel by Victor Hugo. It is one of the longest running musicals in the world.
The opening performance at CWU is 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 9. Subsequent shows are 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10; 2 p.m. Sunday, May 11; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15; 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 16; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17; and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18. Tickets are available at www.cwu.edu/theatre/tickets.
