March 24, 2021

Dear CWU Community,

One of the core values at Central Washington University is a firm belief that diversity of peoples, cultures, and ideas is essential to learning, discovery, and creative expression. Further, our institution is committed to maintaining an environment where faculty, staff, and students feel physically, professionally, and emotionally safe in order to fully engage in and benefit from the university experience.

That also means we must acknowledge and address systemic racism in all its forms. Incidents of violence and hatred directed against Asian/Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have been increasing at an alarming rate across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the past few months, we have seen spikes in the amount of violence and harassment against these communities, including the recent tragic events in Atlanta.

I stand in solidarity with the Asian/Asian American Pacific Islander community. On behalf of CWU, I condemn theses recent acts of racism, bigotry, and violence against them and commit the resources of the university to ensuring the rights, safety, and dignity of all people are respected and protected.

No one should feel unsafe, overlooked, or invisible, and that there is no accountability for acts of hatred aimed at any member of our community. We will have zero tolerance for any type of discriminatory behavior. Together, we will work to resist violence, racism, and hateful ideologies that would seek to divide us.

Sincerely,

James L. Gaudino

President
