CWU Names Interim Provost

Wednesday, July 10, 2019

Central Washington University President James L. Gaudino has appointed Lynn Franken interim provost. She is the former Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the College at Thiel College. Franken will begin her duties on July 15 and continue until an ongoing provost is selected, following a national search.

“Dr. Franken has a strong background in academic and student life that makes her a perfect fit for the position during the next few months,” CWU President James L. Gaudino said. “As an experienced academic administrator, she will be able to help the university continue to move in the right direction during this transitional period.”

Franken holds a PhD in English Literature from the University of Texas in Austin. She also earned her BA and MA in English from Texas Tech.

Prior to working at Thiel College, she served as Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the College at Berloit College and as Dean of the Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University.

Franken was one of several candidates put forward by the Registry, a national organization with more than 500 experienced higher education executives who are available on an interim basis to assist colleges and universities.

Franken said she was particularly interested in the position at Central because “of the high value your institution places on inclusivity of access to higher education in the context of a rigorous curriculum and transformational teaching and learning.”

“As a longtime academic administrator, I have found the best results occur when there is mutual trust and mutual regard built into the process of working together,” she continued. “I look forward to working collaboratively with the faculty, staff, and students at Central to help set a course for the future direction of the university.”
