The Central Washington University men's basketball team has been selected as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) team of the Week, and senior guard Mark McLaughlin (Bothell/Inglemoor HS) earned GNAC Player of the Week honors.
The Wildcats won both their conference matchups last week, defeating Saint Martin's University 83-77, followed by a 106-103 double-overtime victory against Western Oregon University (WOU).
"I'm really proud of our guys, they're really starting to come together and play as a unit," CWU head coach Greg Sparling said. "With the brand of basketball we've been playing lately, we can compete with anyone."
McLaughlin scored a total of 66 points last week, including a 39-point outburst in the win over WOU. In the two contests last week, he made 17 of 34 shots and made all but one of his 26 free throw attempts.
The six-foot, six-inch senior is averaging 29.4 points in GNAC games this season, and his total scoring average of 26.3 ranks second nationally and is tops in the conference. McLaughlin also led the conference in scoring last season.
"Mark is playing at another level right now," Sparling said. "He has worked so hard to become the player he is and I am extremely proud of him. He truly deserves this honor."
Up next for CWU is a trip to Alaska to take on the University of Alaska this Thursday, January 16, followed by the University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday, January 18. Both games are slated for a 8:00 p.m. PST tip-off. The Wildcats are riding a three-game GNAC winning streak and currently are in a three-way tie for third place with a 3-2 conference record.
