John Paul Shields spent 2 1/2 years in Peru studying guitar, including a year's study with the late virtuoso Raúl García Zárate, who was listed as one of the top 15 cultural contributors to Latin America. Join in a musical expedition of the Peruvian guitar as he plays and gives background to the music he learned and the experiences that went with it.

Pride Month was established to celebrate the impact of the LGBTQ+ individuals, advocates and allies. Central Washington University (CWU) was voted one of the top 50 LGBT-friendly universities in the nation and commemorates Pride Month by hosting Pride Week. This year’s theme is Pride Without Borders starting on May 27 through June 2. The Pride Without Borders events include (** means it is open to the public): May 27 - Decorate the Wildcat on the SURC East Patio at 11 a.m. with the CWU Fashion Department and EQuAL. Also, honor the fallen at the Veteran's Memorial Day display on the SURC East Patio. **May 28 - Attend Queer & A: Spill the Tea at 6 p.m. in the Wellington Events Center to ask questions and learn more about the LGBTQ+ community. **May 29 - Watch CWU students and community members perform at Pride & Poetry at 7 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom. Email equal@cwu.edu to sign up. May 30 - Celebrate the LQBTQ+ graduates at Lavender Graduation at 6 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom. This event is invite only. **May 31 - Watch students strut their stuff at the amateur drag show at 11 a.m. on the SURC West Patio. Later, professional Kings and Queens will own the stage in the SURC Ballroom at 8 p.m. **June 1 - Dance the night away at Prom Without Borders from 7-10 p.m. in the SURC Ballroom. June 2 - Distress and socialize before finals at the Queer Bistro from 1-4 p.m. in the 1891 Bistro. This event is sponsored by the Diversity and Equity Center and CWU EQuAL. Ellensburg Community Radio is pleased to announce a concert in the 420 Building! The Westerlies, are a NY based brass quartet. They are also featuring CWU Music student, Shaina Ellis, in the opening set. They will be playing at in the Dark Moon Craft Beer Shop. The Loft Art Gallery will be open for under-age attendees. Thanks to contributions from Jazz in the Valley and Laughing Horse Arts Foundation, the concert is FREE, donations gladly accepted.

On Saturday, June 1st, the CWU Fashion Show Production Class will be holding its 23rd annual fashion show, Fuego. The show will feature 16 original student designer collections. Each show starts with a silent auction one hour before the show with proceeds benefiting the Apparel, Textiles and Merchandising program and helping to fund next years fashion show.

05/23/2019 - Communication and Conflict Resolution for the Workplace

The Dispute Resolution Center of Yakima and Kittitas Counties will offer a day and a half long Communication and Conflict Resolution Skills for the Workplace Training Thursday and Friday May 23 - 24, 2019. Trainees will receive 12 hours of instruction in communication and conflict resolution skills to address workplace problems and disputes, including hands-on experience in communication, negotiation, and listening tools that can help in every aspect of their work and home lives.  The skills learned in this training will be useful in all settings where people interact with one another, such as between co-workers, with customers, between human resource staff or supervisors and employees, and in personal relationships, as well.  Participants will leave with concrete methods of addressing the conflict in their workplaces and in their lives.

For those on the front lines of addressing workplace difficulties or conflict, you may want to consider completing, or sending your employees, to our full 40-hour Basic Mediation Training which will be offered this September.
