Student journalists in Central Washington University’s Communication Department have won four major awards for their work on The Observer, the weekly student newspaper, and on Pulse, the twice-quarterly student lifestyle magazine.
The Observer placed third in the Society of Professional Journalists' Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards for "Best All-Around Non-Daily Newspaper” for schools with enrollment over 10,000. This category included scores of schools in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. The SPJ awards are particularly prestigious because the three issues on which the award is based are dictated by SPJ.
News Editor Santos Herrera, a senior from Granger, won third place in Breaking News Reporting for his coverage of CWU Political Science Prof. Matthew Manweller's sexual misconduct investigation.
“I am so thrilled and proud of The Observer staff for placing in the top three [in SPJ’s contest] for the first time ever. It shows how much hard work has gone into each issue and how great our quality of work is,” said Editor-in-Chief Danny Schmidt, a Seattle senior. “We've already improved in 2013 and look to place even higher at next year's conference.”
Pulse earned third place for Best Student Magazine – a category that encompassed schools of all sizes. Scott Herman won second place in Best Nonfiction Magazine Story for his profile of student Corey Bradbury, who’d spent time in the juvenile court system before turning his life around and enrolling at Central. Herman, from Redmond, graduated at the end of winter quarter.
