Researchers see chimps as friends and equals.
Dar died last Saturday of cardiac failure at the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute (CHCI) at Central Washington University. He was 36.
He was one of five chimpanzees who learned American Sign Language and who were close to each other and to the human researchers at the institute. Read more here.
A public memorial service will be held Sunday, December 9, for Dar,. The 1:00 p.m. ceremony will be held at CHCI.Â
