Environmental Management

The CCC uses an environmental management approach in collaboration with campus and community stakeholders. This is a comprehensive approach that stresses the prevention of high-risk behaviors through changes in the environment in which students make decisions about their alcohol use. Strategies used are developed through the application of scientific evidence and relevant research. In particular, environmental strategies focus on alcohol availability, community education and norms, policy change, and enforcement.

Environmental management addresses the physical, social, and legal environment. This collaborative effort fosters and supports healthy norms and behavior, and discourages high-risk behavior. Examples include:

  • work with downtown businesses that sell or serve alcohol, providing training on ID check and overservice and helping them develop business policies so employees adhere to alcohol law
  • work with local police and the liquor control board to increase enforcement of liquor law
  • provide education regarding such things as not drinking and driving, sanctions for violating laws, increased law enforcement efforts, and being a good neighbor to the downtown
  • work with city government and community groups to change policy on issues such as a social host ordinance, rental housing registration, mandatory training for festivals involving alcohol
