TARGET POPULATION: Students, faculty, and staff of CWU and the surrounding community

MISSION STATEMENT: The Department of Public Safety and Police Services is a cohesive organization with a mission to serve the public by furthering a partnership with the university community to protect life and property, and to prevent crime and resolve problems. In fulfilling our mission as employees of the University, whose prime function is education, every opportunity is taken to educate members of the community in all aspects of crime prevention, personal safety, and potential law violations. In accomplishing our mission, the department becomes involved in environmental safety issues, property storage, campus crime statistics, campus planning, parking, as well as arrest, search and seizure. The Department interacts consistently with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the whole community of Ellensburg.

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES/PROGRAM OBJECTIVE: The department is responsible for enforcement of laws pertaining to alcohol use, misuse and abuse. The department provides many community oriented programs that focus on increasing education about high risk and low risk alcohol consumption. The department is also responsible for the Central Transit program that provides free transportation for students for students for the purpose of increasing safety and reducing risk. The department is responsible for providing statistical data on alcohol related arrests on campus. The department participated in multi-jurisdictional activities designed to reduce the impacts of alcohol in Ellensburg. The department acts as a liaison between the university and other law enforcement agencies in the enforcement of the Student Judicial Code as it pertains to alcohol and student behaviors.

COST OF SERVICES: The programs are funded by state operational funds. Students' programs fee funds the Central Transit Program. Many of the alcohol related services provided are funded by grants obtained from a variety of sources.

FUNDING SOURCE: The department of public safety is funded by state operational funds and students' programs. 

EVALUATION: The department is constantly being evaluated. Formal evaluation occurs each year in the form of established programmatic goals and whether or not we were able to reach those targets. Evaluation is based on a set of pre-established performance indicators. There are also specific grant evaluation requirements.
