RENTON: At a special presentation to City Council on October 25, the Renton Police Department recognized Renton’s “Get With It and Click It!” program and Renton Police Cadet Travis Gnehm for receiving the Target Zero Traffic Award from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC). This award recognizes outstanding citizens who go beyond their job duties and make necessary contributions, changes, and improvements that affect everyone’s safety on our roads.
WTSC honored Renton Police Cadet Travis Gnehm for his role in Renton’s “Get With It and Click It!” campaign that helps promote seat belt awareness and strives to improve safety among teen drivers. As part of the program, police teamed up with students in Renton’s three high schools to improve seat belt compliance. Thanks to the program, compliance rose to 94.5% at Renton High School, 92.8% at Lindbergh High School and 91.4% at Hazen High School.
“There is no one more deserving of this award than Travis,” said Renton Police Sergeant Craig Sjolin.
Gnehm, one of the four cadets in Renton’s police cadet program, has been with the city for over two years. He has also logged over 400 volunteer hours with the Bellevue Police Department, and served as a police explorer with the King County Sheriff’s Department. He is currently attending Central Washington University and hopes to graduate with a Bachelors’ Degree in Law and Justice in 2011.
“I knew I had to be a police officer after my first ride-along,” said Gnehm. “It is truly my calling.”
The WTSC conducts this bi-annual statewide awards program to honor the achievements of people working to make our state’s roadways safer, including the 4 Es: Enforcement, Education, Engineering and Emergency Medical Services.
